Here is a fossil fish from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
It is a Priscacara serrata, from the 18" layer of Fossil Lake. Measuring approximately 6" from tip to tip, this specimen has superb ray fins and caudal fin (tail) which have been meticulously prepped. The dorsal spines have been preserved in the "upright" position, which is the preferred position for this species. Also nice is the natural golden-brown coloring which has been preserved beautifully.
The Priscacara serrata is named because of the serrations on the preopercle, which are easy to identify on this specimen. These serrations are also the difference between a Priscacara serrata and its cousin, the Cockerellites liops.
The plate measures about 9.4" x 6.2" and weighs 3 lbs. 11.70 oz.
A beautiful Priscacara serrata to add to any fossil fish collection, certainly museum grade quality.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA without a photo of the exact item described, as part of that COA, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.  We suggest that instead of relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
