    ABOUT THE BOOK
In 1894, engineer and amateur rodsmith Edward R. Austin presented a paper to the Manchester Anglers’ Association, his hometown angler’s club. In it, he presented his ideas for constructing a “hybrid” bamboo fly rod — one that balanced the best aspects of the American fly rod (lightness) and the British build style (strength). This was later deemed “the Manchester Method.” This collection reprints the complete text and images of Austin’s original manuscript, supplemented with some early history of fishing around Manchester by Col. J.I. Mawson, J.A. Hutton, and John Moscrop (of fishing reel fame) — all members, like Austin, of the Manchester Anglers’ Association. It’s a neat piece of bamboo fly rod history rescued from the dustbin of history. It includes a foreword and appreciation of the Manchester build style by Dr. Todd E.A. Larson. This is a volume in the Second Series of Fly Angler's Desktop Library, which will deal specifically with British and European cane rod building.
ABOUT THE FLY ANGLER'S DESKTOP LIBRARY
The Fly Angler's Desktop Library is a return to the Golden Age of Books, when bigger was not necessarily better. It was a time when publishers like Borzoi Books lovingly crafted beautiful, compact volumes. Now, we can recapture the classic look and feel of these wonderful books in a new series dedicated to bringing out long forgotten treatises as well as new, original works on the art and beauty of fly angling. At a compact 4.5" x 6.875" size, these books are designed to be proudly displayed on the desktop, just like in the olden days. With learned and interesting introductions and appendices of additional materials, you won't want to miss any of these little gems.
